Duties Description Reporting to the Canal Electrical Supervisor, Canal Section Superintendent, and/or the Transportation Maintenance Engineer (Waterways), the duties of the requested position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Performs skilled work at the journey-level in the maintenance, repair and installation of canal floating plant and building electrical systems and equipment.
• Plans layout and installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
• Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs generators, motors, lighting, signal systems, and electrical equipment.
• Repairs and tests electrical work and devices.
• Repairs and maintains signal controls, lights, pumping equipment, signs, oil burners and other mechanisms.
• Acts as a trouble shooter on electrical repairs.
• Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments.
• Conducts a program of preventative maintenance.
• Maintains navigation lighting systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
•Working knowledge and understanding of AC/DC power.
• A valid Commercial Driver’s License appropriate to the type of vehicles and equipment operated may be required.
Minimum Qualifications Trades Specialist (Electrician): Candidates must have four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent* program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program*. ($22.97 - $32.02/hr.)
***Please note that candidates who possess an associate's degree in electrical construction; Electrical Construction & Maintenance; Electrical Construction & Instrumentation; or a comparable and related field are encouraged to apply for the full performance level***
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
