Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Performs Journeyman level duties as part of a regional construction crew that will perform renovations at OPWDD’s properties. The incumbent must be able to work effectively both independently and as a cohesive group made up of other tradespeople in order to achieve the desired goals often within critical time frames.
Daily travel within the district is required and may require travel within NY State to assist other districts with special projects.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Performs Journeyman level plumbing/steamfitting duties and supervises others in the trade repairs, maintains and installs plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, showers/baths, toilets, dishwashers, and garbage disposals.
• Repairs, maintains, and installs equipment such as gas water heaters, heat exchangers, heating equipment, water pumps and other equipment related to steam, gas, or water systems. Plans and lays out installation, alteration, and repair of high- and low-pressure piping systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases. Has ability to review plans and lay out building plumbing systems.
• Ability to work off ladders and scaffolds in performing their job.
• Ability to estimate quantity of materials needed to perform work assigned.
• Acts as lead tradesman in task assigned and provide supervision and guidance to others.
• Ability to schedule work with other trades in order to keep jobs on schedule and to achieve the desired outcome.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
• Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Will be required to train and supervise others.
• Candidate will be trained in the operation and maintenance procedures as related to Asbestos Containing Materials.
• Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.
• Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
• Basic computer skills preferred

Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training
