Applications Considered on a Rolling Basis
Multiple attorney opportunities are available; applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.*

The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking dedicated and motivated attorneys for Assistant Attorneys General positions with the Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau (CFP) in New York City. The OAG is committed to protecting New Yorkers by robustly enforcing state and federal consumer protections and prohibitions on corporate abuse. Selected attorneys will advance economic justice in New York state by directly contributing to CFP’s critical and ongoing enforcement work.

Unfair and deceptive trade practices are a serious problem in the United States threatening the proper functioning of the American marketplace. Additionally, these practices have a significant and adverse effect on communities of color, financially vulnerable consumers, and honest businesses costing those who are impacted billions of dollars each year. CFP enforces consumer protection laws and pursues civil prosecutions against businesses and individuals engaged in fraudulent, misleading, deceptive, or illegal trade practices. Cases typically seek injunctive relief, restitution for consumers, costs, and penalties.

The selected attorneys will join CFP’s vibrant enforcement team that is committed to protecting the interests of the most vulnerable New Yorkers from deceptive and fraudulent practices. CFP conducts investigations and litigates in a variety of areas involving consumer protection that often have national impact. CFP covers a wide portfolio of consumer issues, with a focus on predatory lending, debt collection, housing, banking and alternative financial services, student lending, telecommunications, and health claims.

Minimum Qualifications Applicants should possess at least five (5) years of civil litigation experience. However, CFP will consider well-qualified applicants with fewer years of experience. Candidates who have experience in consumer protection and/or affirmative litigation in federal and state courts are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in consumer issues in the areas of financial services, student lending, and/or mortgage servicing is a plus. Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills are required. Fluency in other languages in addition to English is a plus, but not required.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

Additional Comments The salary range for this position is $81,159 - $173,265 + $3,400 in location pay. To learn more about attorney compensation, please visit the following page:
