The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Position Overview:
The New York State Board of Elections (NYSBOE) is seeking an experienced Windows and VMware Systems Administrator to manage, maintain, and support its IT infrastructure. This position requires expertise in Windows Server environments, virtualization technologies, and enterprise system administration. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring system availability, security, and performance while providing technical support and participating in system upgrades and implementations.
Key Responsibilities:
• Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows Server environments, Active
Directory, Group Policy, and related services.
• Manage VMware virtualization infrastructure, including ESXi hosts and
vCenter, ensuring system performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Perform system monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting to ensure maximum
uptime and performance.
• Implement and maintain security best practices, including patch management,
access control, and compliance with NYSBOE cybersecurity policies.
• Conduct regular system backups and disaster recovery planning.
• Support storage and networking infrastructure in coordination with IT teams.
• Deploy and configure new servers, hardware, and software in accordance with
business needs.
• Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
• Provide technical support and mentorship to junior IT staff as needed.
• Participate in on-call rotations and respond to after-hours system issues.
• Work collaboratively with other IT teams and stakeholders to support business
operations.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Information Technology Specialist 3 (Information Security), Grade 23: Five years of information technology, cybersecurity, or information assurance experience**.
**Substitutions:
Bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science or related field substitutes for three years of required experience; any bachelor’s substitutes for two years of required experience, or
Associate degree with 15 semester credit hours in computer science or related field may substitute for one year of required experience. Candidates in a bachelor’s degree program with at least 15 semester credit hours in computer science or related field may substitute such credits for one year of required experience, or
Master’s degree or higher in computer science or related field substitutes for one year of required experience.
Desirable experience:
• Experience in Windows Server administration and VMware
virtualization.
• Strong knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
• Experience with storage solutions, backup strategies, and disaster recovery.
• Familiarity with networking concepts, firewalls, and security best practices.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and troubleshoot complex
technical issues.
• Excellent documentation and communication skills.
• Experience working in government or highly regulated environments.
• Relevant certifications such as MCSE, VCP, or equivalent are highly desirable.
• Ability to work on-site at the 40 N Pearl St, Albany office.
• Availability to work outside normal business hours as required.
