Duties Description Reporting directly to the Counsel, SG-NS within the Office of the General Counsel of the New York State Division of Human Rights, the Associate Counsel’s duties include, but are not limited to:

• Provide legal assistance and counsel on interpretation and application of the Human Rights Law and corresponding caselaw to Division staff;
• Draft guidance and legal opinions on the reach of the Human Rights Law for use by the Agency and the public;
• Advise on legislative & regulatory issues, providing consultation on and drafting agency legislation and regulations;
• Develop policy recommendations to strengthen the work of the Division;
• Facilitate CLE programs for Legal staff and distribution of legal precedents which impact or relate to prosecution of cases;
• Review and analyze records of hearings/trials and of media reporting on issues involving possible abuses of Human Rights Law;
• Provide legal advice on Division-initiated Investigations and Complaints;
• Ensure compliance by respondents with the Commissioner's Final Orders;
• Draft legal documents, including petitions, answers and briefs, and appears for oral argument around the state to support enforcement of the Commissioner’s Final Orders;
• Provide counsel and assistance with personnel matters, discovery holds, Freedom of Information Law requests, and other counsel matters;
• Conduct legal research related to the issues raised in all the above matters;
• Provide consultation and performs additional duties associated with the Office of General Counsel; and
• Supervision of staff attorneys as applicable.

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have been admitted to the New York State Bar and must have had four (4) years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.
