Duties Description The NYS Center for Recruitment & Public Service is seeking an Assistant Appointments Counsel in Albany, NY. The Assistant Appointments Counsel will report to the Appointments Counsel and will support all of the office’s background check processes for appointees to NYS job and board positions. Specifically, the selected candidate will:
- Review appointees’ background check files for potential issues and conflicts of interest;
- Follow up with candidates and agencies to resolve issues and answer questions about the appointments paperwork;
- Review and approve preliminary background materials (PBMs) for job candidates;
- Work with the Governor’s Counsel’s Office to resolve background check issues;
- Work with agency Counsel offices to implement recusals for appointees as necessary;
- Track the status of appointee paperwork, issues, and recusals;
- Determine candidates’ eligibility for appointment to New York State boards and commissions;
- Read and interpret statute to determine eligibility requirements;
- Support the Center’s team on preparing candidates for Senate confirmation;
- Other duties as assigned by the Appointments Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of legal experience. In addition, applicants must have demonstrated skills in legal research, analysis and writing, and strong organizational skills. Prior experience in New York State Government is preferred but not required. JD required.
Additional Comments Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. Experience in a District Attorney’s Office and/or with criminal investigations would be helpful but is not required.
