Duties Description The Trades Generalist will be required to provide and accomplish technical and trade specific maintenance, construction, and restoration services for DEC’s infrastructure and facilities.
Must have general knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.
Must be able to perform the described job duties/skills according to work orders or verbal instructions by inspecting the work site to determine materials, equipment, tool requirements, and method to be used; developing a plan or lay out for the project or following a blueprint or schematic; assembling, fabricating, or building and installing materials, equipment, or fixtures as required by the scope of work.
May be required to operate diverse types of equipment and have good working knowledge of all equipment being operated.
This position requires a CDL to successfully perform the duties for this position.
Candidate will be required to operate commercial vehicles to transport heavy equipment, supplies and materials.
May be required to supervise subordinate staff and provide instructions to staff on project priorities, work schedules, equipment needs and health and safety issues.
Must be willing and able to plan and lay out construction, maintenance, and repair projects to be completed by department staff and/or by contract.
Procurement of supplies and materials purchased from vendors under state contract, as well as utilizing preferred sources as required. Obtain quotes for various projects and prepare purchase requisitions while following department guidelines and policies.
May be required to administer and manage contracts with outside vendors. Track supplies, materials and equipment to ensure they are used properly.
Responsible for performing various administrative duties and accurate and timely submission of schedules, reports and work orders.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Four years of full time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year for year basis. Experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical trades is preferred.
Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must obtain a Class A CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no air brake restriction.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
