Duties Description GENERAL PARK RANGER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Broadly, Park Rangers will assist Park Management by protecting patrons and park property; their duties are wide-ranging in scope including patrolling campgrounds, beaches, cabin areas, trails, and park buildings; assisting with camping registration and permits; confirming park entrances and exits are secure; helping with general security services for large events such as concerts, fairs, including monitoring and screening attendees or providing traffic and crowd control; and assisting with traffic management during peak periods. Park Rangers respond to calls for assistance, summon emergency responders as needed and ensure that patrons and property are safe and secure until police arrive. In addition, Rangers would administer basic First Aid as trained and assist police with search and rescue efforts and fire prevention and suppression activities. In addition to their regular duties, Park Rangers may periodically assist staff at toll booths and perform bank runs and audits. Rangers also assist site staff in maintaining and closing facilities, swim facility safety, and similar. Each shift will consist of a public facing staff member assigned to the desk and at least one staff member assigned to field response and assigned roving and patrol duties.

NIGHT OPERATIONS ASSIGNMENT:

• Perform desk duty, patrol, and light maintenance activities during afterhours periods for the non-emergency Park Operations Support Desk.
• Monitor, answer, and appropriately respond to inquiries and calls for assistance during daytime and evening hours.
• Receive telephone calls and in-person reports and requests for assistance from the public.
• Monitor radio communications and answer radio calls.
• Communicate and coordinate with NYS Park Police dispatch as appropriate.
• Maintain logs of all known activities and calls that occur during each shift and ensure appropriate measures are taken while coordinating and communicating with response personnel and management.
• Record and relay accurate and timely information.
• Verify identity of and distribute “late keys” to incoming campers.
• Patrol camping and recreational areas, interact with park patrons, and provide information/support as appropriate.
• Work to enforce park rules and regulations through education and voluntary compliance for minor infractions, and notify NYS Park Police as appropriate, and for all other law enforcement matters.
• Inspect and report on the general condition of specific operational areas as assigned or the facility as a whole.
• Provide assessment reports to inform park management’s decisions regarding call-outs for specialized personnel.
• Perform call-outs of operations and skilled trades staff.
• Conduct minor cabin/cottage/restroom facility maintenance repairs, cleaning, and restocking of supplies.
• Clear debris from park roads and bike paths.
• Conduct snow removal activities as needed.
• Communicate with and check in on Camper Assistance Program volunteers.
• Assist with nuisance wildlife complaints.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

NON-COMPETITIVE APPOINTMENT:

Must be at least age 18 at time of appointment and must have a high school diploma or its equivalent; must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license when required to drive state vehicles; must be able to physically perform the duties of the position; must successfully complete a background investigation including fingerprinting; and must successfully complete 24 hours of Security Guard training and obtain and maintain a New York State Security Guard Certification.

*Fees may apply: Candidates who are not presently serving as a Park Ranger may be required to pay for background fingerprinting ($101.75) and NYS Security Guard License Application Fee ($36) prior to employment*

**Park Rangers are subject to the provisions of the Security Guard Act of 1993, are unarmed, and have neither peace nor police officer status.**

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Security Guard License as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to work a variable schedule including overnights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
• Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other basic computer skills.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner under stressful conditions.
• Will receive training in First Aid/CPR, ATV/UTV operation, and basic chainsaw use.
