Duties Description This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair and installation of heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment; campus refrigeration equipment related to dining service operation such as coolers, freezers, ice machines and associated equipment. Duties include, but are not limited to, performing season start -ups, shut downs and maintenance of all building a/c units, ammonia compressors, and brine units to ensure efficient operation; inspect, repair and maintain all campus water and air cooled chiller unit and cooling towers; overhaul compressors, pumps and electric motors associated; test lines and related connections for refrigerant leaks and repair as necessary; test, repair and calibrate chiller and or air conditioning controls. Observation and demonstration of proper methods and working procedures for other appropriate workers is also included, as is performing monthly preventive maintenance on campus refrigeration equipment and making recommendations for new refrigeration equipment installation. The use of appropriate PPE, selecting and safely using the appropriate tools and equipment needed to complete the assigned tasks, and attending job related training will be required. Minimum Qualifications -Must be eligible for permanent appointment to this title pursuant to civil service law.
-Non-Competitive:
Successful completion of a NYS two-year Service & Repair Mechanic(HVAC-R) Traineeship or NYS two-year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level mechanic or electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program, one (1) year of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment. Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

-When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Additional Comments The Central Heating Plant maintains all heating, air conditioning, hot water, ventilation, and refrigeration services as well as overseeing the proper functioning of all elevators on campus. We also answer after hours calls and provide service, as needed, and are a 24/7 operation. We are part of the Administration & Finance division which provides essential services to our campus, local, state, federal and international customers. We are responsible for human, physical, financial and technical resources. As professionals, we navigate systems in a collaborative and sensitive way to assist the university in achieving its educational mission. The work schedule for this position will be Monday thru Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30pm.
