Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates to fill 4 Special Education Assistant Substitute positions in the New York State School for the Deaf. The incumbents of these positions will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school’s education program in the absence of regular staff. The duties of these positions will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Provide direct supervision to students;
• Assist Instructors in the delivery and practice of content;
• Supervise students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;
• Escort students from class to class; and
• Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency diploma AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND obtain a New York State certification as a Teaching Assistant or be eligible to obtain such certification within one (1) year of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following:
• Experience working with special needs students particularly deaf or hard of hearing;
• The ability to communicate through ASL/ Sign Language; and
• Experience working with adults as part of a team.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
These will be temporary, hourly, on-call positions. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and/or transcripts will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within (1) one year of employment. After one (1) year of employment, continued employment as a Special Education Assistant is dependent upon maintaining the appropriate level of certification as a New York State Teaching Assistant, including adhering to all relevant professional development and training requirements as specified by the Office of Teaching Initiatives. Failure to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant within one (1) year of employment will result in removal from employment. After one (1) year employment, failure to maintain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate will result in removal from employment. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. This position leads to a maximum salary of $20.71/hour. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
