Duties Description The New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF) is seeking several high-performing and motivated candidates to join its Investment Department for the Fall semester. The department oversees approximately $21 billion dollars across multiple asset classes.
This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with NYSIF's investment activities, and exposure to various asset classes. Interns will work directly with either the Alternatives or Sustainable Investing teams.
Alternatives Team
The Alternatives team oversees $1.2 billion in assets across private equity, private credit, and real assets. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Analyze and evaluate investment opportunities through financial and qualitative analysis.
• Assist in the due diligence process by reviewing fund materials, analyzing performance data, and preparing summaries for internal discussions.
• Assist in drafting investment memos and presentation materials for review by the Investment Committee.
• Conduct industry research and market analysis to inform investment decisions and portfolio strategy.
• Assist in identifying and tracking prospective investment opportunities by engaging with external managers and maintaining pipeline data.
• Work closely with investment members to support the broader investment workflow, from sourcing through execution and monitoring.
Sustainable Investing Team
Sustainable Investing team plays a central role in advancing NYSIF’s Net Zero Plus Climate Transition Strategy. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Support the integration of sustainability factors across the investment process by conducting research and analysis on material ESG risks and opportunities.
• Assist in identifying sustainable investment opportunities for NYSIF’s Net Zero Climate Portfolio.
• Assist in evaluating investment managers’ ESG policies, practices, and disclosures as part of ongoing due diligence and monitoring.
• Contribute to the development and refinement of climate-related frameworks and sustainable investment strategies, including decarbonization initiatives.
• Assist in drafting sustainability memos and presentation materials for review by the Investment Committee.
• Collaborate with other investment teams to support ESG integration across asset classes and develop cross-cutting research on sustainability trends.
• Maintain and update ESG-related dashboards, scorecards, and databases used for portfolio monitoring and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications • Currently enrolled in a college or university, or graduate program with a minimum of one (1) year of completed study.
• Enrolled in a NY State college or university and/or a NYS permanent resident.
Preferred Qualifications
• Academic background in Finance, Economics, or Sustainability
• Strong writing and communication skills
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data analysis)
• Working knowledge of PowerPoint for reports and presentations
• Proficiency with financial statement analysis
• Experience with statistical tools for evaluating ESG data (for Sustainable Investing applicants)

Additional Comments Interns must be available to work a minimum of 8 hours per week and commute to the NYC office (199 Church Street) at least once a week.
