Duties Description Perform analysis on blood and urine samples and performs molecular testing on nasal swabs; Responsible for the identification of COVID, FluA and FluB infectious agents; Perform laboratory testing on cobas liat equipment, iSTAT for linearity studies, troubleshooting on the freestyle precision pro glucometers; Monitor results and ensure data files accordingly through interface monitoring; Analyze linearity and correlation data for ABG (arterial blood gases); Responsible for quantitative evaluation of lab results such as rates of tests performed, frequency of tests performed, and accuracy of test performance; Responsible for identifying and troubleshooting nonconformances on the cobas liat, iSTATs, and freestyle precision pro glucometers; Responsible for creating and updating laboratory documentation to maintain certification of the laboratory with The Joint Commission and New York State; Perform dipsticks to determine whether culture is warranted and submit specimen for further testing; Responsible for reviewing all microbiology culture results for multi drug resistant organisms; Responsible for performing environmental swabs to detect contamination of surfaces for infectious agents; Responsible for ensuring testing techniques and processes performed by other internal and external laboratory staff are completed proficiently; Works closely with the Lab Pathologist and Medical Staff in communicating results, and ensuring documentation of procedures is available for review; Upon request, provides specimens to support scientific research and development at Wadsworth Center; Review laboratory procedures, test, and corresponding documentation completed by subordinate staff; maintain inventory control systems; ensure proper storage, availability, and efficient operation of laboratory supplies; direct the effective and efficient use of fiscal and material resources of the department; determine staff schedules and assignments, and prepare and coordinate performance evaluations. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Transfers: New York State employees with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent service in a title at or above SG-11 and determined to be eligible for transfer to Laboratory Specialist 1, SG-18, Laboratory Specialist Trainee 1, NS, or Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2, NS, under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Open-Competitive HELPS qualifications:

Laboratory Specialist Trainee 1: A bachelor's or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science.

Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2: A bachelor's or higher degree in one of the above fields AND one year of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs.

Laboratory Specialist 1: A bachelor's or higher degree in one of the above fields AND two years of experience.

Substitution: A master’s degree in a related field can substitute for one year of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in biochemistry AND a minimum of 5 years of experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting performing specimen analysis in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation and microbiology; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; use of the laboratory information system and electronic medical records; statistical analysis of laboratory data; strong understanding of Good Laboratory Practices including quality assurance and regulatory compliance with NYS and The Joint Commission; and/or experience developing policy and procedures for laboratory testing.

Posted salary ranger $54,844 to $89,138 includes $4,000 of downstate adjustment.
