Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Senior Museum Exhibit Planner position in the New York State Museum (NYSM). Under supervision of an Associate Museum Exhibit Planner or other higher-level staff, the Senior Museum Exhibit Planner performs the full range of duties for temporary and minor permanent exhibits at the State Museum. Working with Museum staff and external experts, the Senior Planner will organize exhibits and, provide scheduling, coordination and correspondence for the exhibits division. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Assists Museum staff and external experts to organize exhibits, providing scheduling, coordination and correspondence for the State Museum.
• Conducts research required to provide the basis for exhibits.
• Prepares outlines and summaries of plans for exhibit units, develops themes, messages, and approaches for exhibits.
• Participates in the selection of specimens, objects, and graphic materials for use in exhibits.
• Coordinates activities related to borrowed exhibits, including scheduling, delivery of materials, installation and de-installation.
• Prepares copy for non-technical publications such as illustrated guides or descriptive pamphlets relating to exhibits and provides copy for audio-visual exhibit presentation.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Museum Exhibit Planner.
Non-Competitive Appointment: A bachelors degree in natural science (zoology, biology, geology), archaeology/anthropology, history, art or art history and two years of professional experience at a museum or cultural institution displaying exhibits, such as an art gallery, zoo, botanical garden, educational center or historical society. A masters degree in museum studies may be substituted for one year of the required experience. A doctoral degree in museum studies may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree or transcript will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $85,138 based on annual performance advances.
