Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for Museum Scientist 2 in the Research and Collections Division of the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 4 of the Museum’s Cultural Resources Survey Program (CRSP), the incumbent conducts architectural surveys and documents historic properties for CRSP projects throughout New York State. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Independently perform reconnaissance field survey and documentation of architectural properties (e.g., buildings, structures, sites, and objects) to all current Cultural Resource Management (CRM) professional standards;
• Evaluate architectural properties for eligibility for the New York State and/or National Register of Historic Places;
• Prepare written architectural survey reports and Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) documents;
• Complete report production and distribution to all current professional standards;
• Assist with technical report review and editing;
• Assist with administrative tasks including project status reports and updating Memoranda of Agreement with client agencies, and
• Interact with public and with client agencies, and assist with Museum public outreach, such as providing material for Museum social media and making presentations to school groups and other visitors.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Museum Scientist 2.

Non-Competitive Appointment: A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, architectural history, historic preservation, history, or related field and three years of professional experience; OR a master’s degree in an appropriate field and two years of such experience; OR a doctorate degree in an appropriate field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• A master’s degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or related field and two years of experience in a cultural resource management (CRM) or agency preservation program.
• Applicants with demonstrated expertise in the architectural history of New York State or nearby areas (e.g., authorship of survey reports, HABS/HAER documents, Determination of Eligibility statements, and/or National Register nominations).
• Familiarity with the New York State Historic Preservation Office CRIS database and Trekker field survey application.

This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. For 55b/c appointment, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications and possess a current 55b/c eligibility letter.
