Duties Description Position Summary:
The University at Buffalo is currently seeking a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) within the Campus Operations department. In this role, you will be responsible for performing skilled mechanical work within the fleet maintenance shop in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative fuel self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment. May perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction, and other equipment in the field.

In this position, you will be responsible for the following:
• Diagnose and perform major and minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment.
• Install body and fender work on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment.
• Maintain gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel engines; perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment. When licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles, may perform NYS Motor Vehicle Inspections.
• Maintain diesel powered equipment and components such as, hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials, hydraulic and air brakes, automotive electronics, fuel injection systems, turbochargers and starting systems.
• Operate test equipment, hand and power tools, including equipment that assists in the diagnosis and repair of electronic engine control systems.
• Weld, cut, and braze a variety of materials using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment.
• May supervise, train, and instruct subordinates.
• Order, receive, and inventories supplies and parts for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
• Operate a variety of self-propelled motor vehicles and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment to test proper operation.
• Other duties as assigned.

This position is defined as safety-sensitive, and as such, is subject pre employment and random alcohol and drug testing under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
• Valid NYS CDL B driver license with Tow Truck/Tanker/Airbrake endorsements.
• You are required to create a Clearinghouse account as part of your application.

Non-competitive:
• Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems.
OR
• An associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
Substitution:
Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience:
• Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
• Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.


Departmental Operation Needs:
• New York State DMV Inspector Certification for groups 1 & 2 vehicles.
• Refrigerant recycling and service procedures certification.
• Working knowledge of test equipment including, but not limited to; Fluke automotive meters, OTC scan tool, hydraulic system pressure gauges, engine compression gauges, A/C recycling and charging equipment.
• Ability to overhaul, adjust, and repair gasoline, compressed natural gas, and diesel engines; clutches; transmissions; differentials; ignition, electrical, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel & suspension mechanisms; body & frame components.
• Must be willing to work overtime for snow removal and other seasonal requirements.

Physical Demands:
• Will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. May transport materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus utilizing provided tools.
• Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical tasks, including frequent work in various weather conditions.
