Duties Description The New York State Department of Financial Services seeks to build an equitable, transparent, and resilient financial system that benefits individuals and supports business. Under the general direction of the Superintendent of the Department of Financial Services, the Special Counsel serves as a member of the Executive Staff to provide strategic counsel and manage day-to-day operations. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
• Collaborates with the Superintendent and Executive Staff to develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with the Department’s goals.
• Oversees special projects and initiatives, including annual policy planning, ensuring they are completed on time and to the Superintendent’s expectations.
• Initiates, coordinates, and sees through to completion, key policy priorities of the Superintendent
• Partners with Human Resources to manage executive-level and high priority hires and address personnel issues
• Leverages understanding of the Superintendent’s priorities, ways of working, and expectations, to provide counsel to the business units regarding their work
• Acts as a trusted advisor to the Superintendent, providing insights and guidance on critical business decisions
• Works closely with External Affairs on the Superintendent’s internal communications and external visibility, managing key meetings with legislators and key stakeholders; and
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Preferred Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience
• Strong leadership and management skills
• Ability to work well in a matrixed organization, leading with influence
• Ability to both think strategically while executing on day-to-day priorities
• Exceptional organization skills to manage multiple projects and timelines effectively
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Appointment Method:
This is an appointment to a position in the exempt jurisdictional class. As such, the incumbent of this position would serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Additional Comments Please note that a change in negotiating unit may affect your salary, insurance and other benefits.
Salary: $172,787 - $213,995 (salary commensurate with experience)
Positions located within the New York City metropolitan area, as well as Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland, and Westchester Counties, are also eligible to receive an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment.
Appointment Status: This is an appointment to a position in the exempt jurisdictional class.
Appointment to this position is pending Governor Appointment’s Office and Division of Budget approval.
