Duties Description The NYS DOCCS Office of Special Investigations (OSI) is seeking qualified candidates for consideration to serve as a Training Investigator in the Training Unit within OSI’s Intake, Training, and Analysis Division (ITAD). This division, ITAD, is charged with, among other responsibilities, coordinating, tracking, and providing training to the OSI investigative staff. The primary duties of an OSI Training Investigator will be to travel to OSI offices around New York State and provide instruction to OSI’s investigative staff. The courses taught will include, but are not limited to, the following: fundamentals of investigations, interview and interrogation, crime-scene processing, evidence handling, use of force, firearms proficiency and safety, unarmed defensive tactics, wellness for law enforcement officers, search and seizure, and other classes related to conducting investigations. Developing course materials, power points, and other training aids is required. There will also be opportunities to take other training courses, which will then be taught back to OSI staff by the Training Investigator. Some courses will co-taught with another instructor, while some will be taught by one trainer. Record keeping is necessary, as is the ability to assist with other duties if needed to advance the public safety mission of OSI.
Minimum Qualifications The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision - Office of Special Investigations (DOCCS OSI) is seeking qualified candidates to be considered for two openings as Training Investigators to assist with OSI’s professional training needs across New York State. OSI is seeking Training Investigator candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:
1. Preferred General Topics Instructor for police and/or investigators certified by NYS Division of Criminal Justice Service (DCJS).
2. Successfully completed DCJS Instructor Development Course or its equivalent.
3. Preferred certifications for Unarmed Defensive Tactics (UTD) and Weapons Training Officer (WTO).
4. Self-starter, self-disciplined, capable of performing with minimum supervision.
5. Strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, and general law enforcement skills.
6. Record of having taught courses to law enforcement officers.
7. Successfully complete any requited certification program and any additional required training.
The additional minimum qualifications include two years’ investigative, law enforcement, or public safety experience. Candidates should also have exhibited demonstrated leadership qualities. Knowledge of the subject matter and criminal justice or similar subject-matter studies are required. OSI investigative staff must possess, at a minimum, knowledge of the applicable laws, the highest levels of behavior including personal integrity and ethics; fairness; character; judgment; attitude; and respect for and ability to work with others inside and outside OSI. Appropriate licensure and certifications (including being or becoming a peace officer qualified to carry a firearm) are also required. The ability to travel is also necessary. Additional Comments All OSI Offices, namely Albany, Long Island City, Wallkill, Fishkill, Groveland, Dannemora, Utica, Rochester, Riverview, or Buffalo. Office assignments are based upon the needs of OSI and the Department. Travel is required. There are two vacancies for this title.
