Duties Description DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the Curator 1 will perform professional activities requiring specialized experience and training to identify, maintain, protect, and interpret historic objects in the care and custody of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Research and analyze historic collections and themes relating to NYS historic sites.
• Perform and supervise surveys of site collections to assess the appropriateness of objects to site furnishing plans, exhibit, research, and interpretive needs.
• Research and place objects in historical context by identifying and locating research resources and comparing objects, including methods of fabrication, style, and composition
• Create files and records to document each object.
• Evaluate objects for acquisition, loans, exhibits, and deaccessioning.
• Analyze and report findings in reports, publications, lectures, and workshops.
• Review conservation treatment proposals with conservators and site staff.
• Answer request for information about collections from the public, museums, and other historic organizations.
• Implement Bureau policies, procedures, and guidelines concerning collections.
• Attend professional meetings and agency training.
• Supervise volunteers, interns, and contract workers as directed.
• Perform other related duties as needed.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS QUALIFICATIONS:
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).**
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
A bachelor’s degree in American Studies, Art History, History, History of Technology, Museum Studies, or Public History AND two years of professional experience in collections in a historical museum, general museum with historical collections or historic site.
OR a master’s degree or higher in any of the above disciplines and ONE year of the qualifying experience as noted above.
**For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Employees appointed via the NY HELPS program are restricted for promotional appointment until their position is covered-in to the competitive class by the New York State Civil Service Commission (CSC), or they otherwise obtain permanent competitive status. The CSC has recently covered-in employees who were appointed via NY HELPS on a permanent or contingent permanent basis between June 26, 2024, and June 11, 2025. Notification to employees regarding a change in their status is forthcoming. You may wish to apply if you received a permanent NY HELPS appointment to a qualifying title within these timeframes and are interested in this opportunity. Your eligibility for promotion will be reviewed by Human Resources. Employees with a permanent NY HELPS appointment occurring effective 6/12/25 or later will be addressed with a subsequent cover-in.

ELIGIBLE LIST QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list.
REASSIGNMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be current New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employees and have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Curator 1 to be eligible for reassignment.
PROVISIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
In the absence of an eligible list(s) with three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. For provisional appointment, candidates must be meet the following minimum qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in American Studies, Art History, History, History of Technology, Museum Studies, or Public History AND two years of professional experience in collections in a historical museum, general museum with historical collections or historic site.
Or 2. a master's degree or higher in any of the above disciplines and ONE year of the qualifying experience as noted above.
The appointed candidate would have to take, pass and be reachable on the next holding of the examination to be appointed permanently.
70.1 Transfer Qualifications:
One year of permanent, contingent permanent, or 55 b/c service in a title eligible for transfer.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
