Duties Description Under the general supervision of higher-level personnel, the incumbent will:
• Perform maintenance on buildings, roads, and grounds.
• Under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson, assist in performing semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities in a variety of trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, and mechanical repairs.
• Operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including pickup trucks, dump trucks, trailers, backhoes, skid-steers, snowplow vehicles and sanders, mowers, and other self-propelled equipment.
• Assist in repairing roads, drainage ditches, and trails.
• Assist with tree pruning and removal, operate chainsaws and chippers.
• Complete snow removal by shoveling snow and operating plow vehicles in the winter months.
• Assist in emergency situations by applying emergency practices and procedures.
• Assign, supervise, review, train, and evaluate work of subordinate employees.
• This position involves working from heights and ladders.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• Communicate in writing as well as read and comprehend written material.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in
daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;
OR - One year of experience in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance
OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university;
OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;
OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to work a variable schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
Location Pay:
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($42,641) and the Mid-Hudson Adjustment ($2,000). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($52,413) and the Mid-Hudson Adjustment ($2,000).
