Duties Description Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution in a safe and efficient manner.

Identify, recommend and develop energy conservation projects.

Supervise subordinate staff in the operation and maintenance of heating facilities and mechanical equipment.

Supervise contractors in an emergency or project situation.

Responsible for operations of the overall physical plant.

Additional duties will be discussed in detail during the interview.

Minimum Qualifications One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in this title.

Open to the Public: This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment if the candidate meets the below NY HELPS minimum qualifications.
U.S. Air Force: Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program.
OR U.S. Coast Guard: Must have been an enlisted machinery technician (MK) OR possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the Coast Guard.
OR U.S. Army: Must have been an enlisted power generation equipment repairer.
OR U.S. Navy: Must have been an enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman.
OR U.S. Merchant Marine: Must have a merchant mariner’s document (MMD) and have been a qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/watertender, refrigerating engineer or engineman.
OR Completion of a NYS Department of Labor apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or for plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC mechanic, or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC).
OR Completion of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
OR An associate’s degree in HVAC, from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers and/or auxiliary equipment or HVAC equipment in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities.
OR A bachelor’s degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Marine Engineering.
OR Completion of a HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours)
OR Completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college.
OR Four years of full-time hands on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
OR Four years of full-time hands on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics and /or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.

This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility.

Additional Comments Background Investigation Requirements:

1) All prospective employees will be investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees.

2) All prospective employees will be screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees will be required to pay any necessary fees.

3) For Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY) prospective appointees will be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable.
