Duties Description The Assistant Research Scientist (ARS) will support the NYS Birth Defects Registry (BDR) surveillance efforts related to Article 27-C, Section 2733 of Public Health Law and State Sanitary Code 10 NYCRR Part 22. The Registry receives over 40,000 birth defect reports per year, and the ARS will serve a critical role in conducting birth defects surveillance by receiving and interpreting incoming data reports, entering data into the registry database, and reviewing data for missing information and errors.

They will be responsible for the timeliness of data processing as it is necessary for enabling registry staff to respond to public health inquiries about birth defects prevalence, particularly as it relates to environmental exposures. The ARS will also provide accurate counts of New Yorkers with birth defects which is also important for quantifying needs for services within the state population. Without this position, birth defect reports cannot be processed in a timely manner and quality of the data may be compromised.

Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14: a bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related degree* AND at least one year of post degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

*Related Degrees may include: Medical Anthropology, Psychology, Nutrition, Nursing, Pharmacology, Mathematics, Education, Medical Geography, Sociology, Economics, or other relevant Social Science, or Natural Sciences.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience in birth defects surveillance or surveillance of other health conditions. They will also have familiarity with medical coding systems, such as Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD) or Business Professionals of America (BPA). The preferred candidate will have intermediate or advanced proficiency in Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and Excel. They will be able to demonstrate their ability to complete detail-oriented tasks, including data cleaning and management; excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences; and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Additional Comments One full-time, contingent-permanent, non-competitive appointment opportunity.

Candidates, when applying, please indicate how you possess a full-scope of professional research experience that includes problem definition, planning research approaches, conducting studies, collecting and processing data, and interpreting and reporting findings.
