Duties Description Oversee, manage and administer food and dietetic programs for incarcerated individuals in State facilities. Plan, organize, and direct food preparation and service clinical dietetic program activities, such as nutrition counsel, menu development, and food safety and sanitation operations, develop and implement nutrition policies and procedures; supervise the activities of dietitians, and other food and nutrition services staff; and monitor program operations to ensure the nutritional health and well-being of individuals served and are compliance with established standards, laws, rules and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*
Minimum Qualifications for taking the Promotional Examination: must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive, or 55-b/55-c service as a Dietitian 2 AND;
Either 1. have a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) as a Registered Dietitian (RD);
Or 2. have your New York State Education Department (NYSED) certification in dietetics-nutrition AND have completed a minimum of an additional 400 hours* of supervised dietetics practice under the supervision of an RD.
* The additional 400 hours required is in addition to the 800 hours of supervised dietetics practice under the supervision of an RD required for NYSED certification. On your application you must provide the name of the institution where you obtained the additional hours; the name of your supervisor; and your supervisor's qualifications.
Qualifying Experience for Appointment from the Eligible List: After one year as a Dietitian 2, successful candidates will be qualified for appointment from the eligible list.
Minimum Qualifications for taking the Open Competitive Examination: must have two years of post-registration/certification professional administrative experience* in a food or nutrition program of which one year MUST have included supervision AND;
Either 1. have a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) as a Registered Dietitian (RD);
Or 2. have your New York State Education Department (NYSED) certification in dietetics-nutrition AND have completed a minimum of an additional 400 hours** of supervised dietetics practice under the supervision of an RD.
* Qualifying Experience: For the purposes of the examination, professional administrative experience is defined as duties focused on planning, coordinating, and supervising a nutrition services program that includes one or more program components: food distribution, food production, clinical dietetics, outpatient nutrition services, or quality management services in a community-based, residential, hospital, or institutional nutrition services program setting.
** The additional 400 hours required is in addition to the 800 hours of supervised dietetics practice under the supervision of an RD required for NYSED certification. *For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
