Duties Description Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor 2, SG-17, the selected candidate will perform journey-level sign painting as well as perform supervisory tasks. Duties will include, but are limited to:
• Prepare sketches of signs indicating the layout and lettering design.
• Perform silk screening procedures for signs which includes laying out the design on stencil film, fabricating silk screens, cutting screen stencils by hand, and painting signs according to accepted silk screen practice and procedures.
• Sketch, lay out, and produce reflectorized signs using reflective coated materials.
• Utilize computers, software, commercial printers and sign-making equipment to produce signs of metal, wood, plastic, vinyl, and other materials appropriate for the application.
• Set up and operate mechanized equipment such as power metal shears, punch and drill presses, and band saws according to specifications to produce blanks and other structured components of signs.
• Design and hand letter posters, special signs, and cards used in exhibit work with emphasis on artistic layout.
• Apply gold and silver leaf to signs.
• Estimate material needs for the production and repair of signs and orders and maintain supplies and equipment for the sign shop.
• Maintain standard records of materials used and work produced.
• Perform other related duties as required.
• May supervise, provide training and instruction to subordinate staff, including semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
• Communicate effectively, including in writing, with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner as well as read and comprehend written material.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience* in the design, lettering and making of signs under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in painting and sign painting at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Specialist (Sign Fabrication).

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Candidate must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Must be proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud applications including Adobe Illustrator.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
• Candidate must attend the training course: Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting, or an acceptable equivalent, provided by the agency within one year of appointment as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to read and interpret plans, documents, specifications, blueprints and drawings.
• Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds.

LOCATION PAY
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($50,425) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($61,548) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).
