Duties Description The Policy and Community Coordinator serves as a liaison between community organizations, policy advocates, and our office to develop and advance legislation that is aligned with the needs of Senate District 18 as well as Senator Salazar’s legislative goals and committee responsibilities. This role contains responsibilities from both the legislative team and the constituent services team.

Responsibilities in this role include (but are not limited to):

Legislative Responsibilities
•Meet with organizations and constituents to work on policies that will benefit SD18 or are related to the Senator’s committee
•Assist in organizing Committee meetings
•Work with the Legislative Director to draft bills and the corresponding bill memos
•Coordinate with advocates to gain legislative and community support
•Prep the Senator and other team members with legislative talking points for hearings and other legislative related matters
•Meet with legislative team to strategize which policies to prioritize throughout legislative session
•Attend events, meetings, and rallies pertaining to policy interests of the Senator

Constituent Services Responsibilities
•Assist constituents by answering the phone and email and taking any walk-in appointments
•Contact government agencies and non-profits to address constituent issues
•Attend events and community meetings on an ad hoc basis and help plan if necessary
•Analyze casework to notice trends or areas where constituents can be better served and updating the team, especially as this relates to legislation
•May run political educational programming based on Salazar legislation for constituents and target-based communities


Minimum Qualifications •This role is based out of the district office in Brooklyn, but may require travel to Albany during the legislative session (January to June) once or twice per month.
•This role requires at least two in-person office days a week. Our office is open Monday-Thursday, 10am-5:30pm. Weekend and evening events will most likely be required as well, but they are infrequent.

The ideal candidate will also have:
•Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred.
•Interest and background in housing policy and/or criminal legal system is preferred.
•Knowledge of NYS Senate District 18 is a plus.

Additional Comments Salary range is $75,000 to $80,000, commensurate with education and experience.
