Duties Description The State University of New York (SUNY) System Administration, located in Albany, New York, currently has an opening for a Trades Generalist. This position will report to the SUNY Plaza Director of Facilities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Operates machine tools, including lathes, shapers, milling machines, metal cutting saws, planers, and radial drill presses to manufacture metal items such as large bushings, special bolts and cutting keyways.
- Cuts, welds, and brazes a variety of metal materials and equipment. Manufactures standard items of sheet metalware such as pails, dippers, and garbage cans. Assists in maintaining and erecting signs.
- Performs skilled carpentry activities including repairing doors, windows, window sashes, storm windows, stairs, railings, furniture, locks, and door hardware.
- Operates shop machinery to make and assemble bookcases, shelves, tables, trenches, signs, and modular furniture.
- Loads, unloads, sets up and removes various types of furniture and office equipment by physically lifting items.
- Assist in erecting and renovating buildings and structures.
- Assists in repairing and maintaining locks by making keys, changing lock combinations, opening locks when keys are not available, installing locks, and cleaning and repairing locks.
- Assists in painting and decorating by performing interior and exterior painting not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment, staining, and finishing wood and furniture, painting equipment, installing wallpaper, and spray-painting surfaces and equipment.
- Performs semiskilled masonry repairs and installation activities such as pointing up brick and stonework, patching plaster walls, setting tiles, laying brick and stone, finishing concrete work, replacing fire brick in boilers, and operating equipment including mixers and concrete block machines.
- Snow and ice removal, via various means including shoveling and snowplowing.
- Transport furniture, materials and supplies using the box truck to and from the warehouse and vendor locations.
Minimum Qualifications Requirements:
- Four years in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades worker or completion of a two-year technical school course.
CDL License
- Ability to climb, stoop and complete moderately heavy lifting
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades work assigned.
- Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
- Ability to read plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Hours: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm
Starting Salary: $50,425
Note: Non-Competitive: Candidates should be aware that a preferred list, transfer list, placement roster and/or reemployment roster of laid off State employees may be certified against this vacancy by the Department of Civil Service.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.
