Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.

The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:

Either 1. TWO years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from a high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;

Or 2. an associate’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;

Or 3. a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics** issued by a regionally accredited college or university and ONE year of experience as listed above in # 1;

Substitution:

Either: 36 semester credit hours of college course work in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology may be substituted for experience at the rate of 18 semester credit hours equaling ONE year of experience listed above in #1;

Or: graduation from a high school technical education program (recognized by the New York State Education Department as meeting acceptable program practices and standards) in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics may be substituted for ONE year of experience listed above in #1.

Duties Description Construction Duties:

Senior Engineering Technicians assist in the performance of civil engineering work and provide engineering support services to engineers by participating in Construction Inspection, field survey work, reviewing contracts and specifications, and preparing and reviewing maps and plans. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: taking measurements, checking computations, collecting and compiling data, making simple calculations, performing inspections and preparing inspection reports on construction projects, and office engineering tasks. Duties may also include various Materials or Geotechnical Section support activities. Extensive travel throughout the Region will be required. At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of a valid NYS Driver's License is required or the candidates must otherwise demonstrate the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Design Duties:

The incumbent will be a member of a design squad or a design support unit located within the Regional Design Group. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the duties of a Senior Engineering Technician (SET). As a SET, the candidate could be responsible for assisting projects of varying complexity under the direction of the squad leader. Typical Design squad duties include: working with various computer applications (CADD, Inroads, estimating software, preliminary estimating programs, etc), preparing and reviewing contract documents and specifications, collecting and analyzing field data, assisting in all aspects of public outreach, developing and checking quantity estimates, preparing portions of written reports, assisting in the design of highway and bridge projects. Design support groups include Structures Safety Assurance, Survey, ROW Mapping, Landscape/Environmental, Quality Assurance, and Utilities. Duties within these groups will be discussed with the candidate during the interview process.
