Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NON-COMPETITIVE APPOINTMENTS:
Possession of a FCC Radio Telephone Operator's License - General Class and a FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class License and four (4) years of experience in the design, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic communications equipment for commercial, engineering, or scientific use; or an associate's degree in electronics or electronic technology and two years of experience described above.
This title is non-competitive. No examination is necessary. However, you must still meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
Duties Description Maintain NYSDEC public safety radio systems and equipment, including field work at radio tower sites; responsible for programming radio equipment and be responsible for VoIP regional dispatch radio equipment performance; responsible for integrating County 911 P25 trunked radio systems into DEC Office of Public Protection radio equipment. Use appropriate test equipment and observation in diagnosing faulty radio systems and devices, including radio interference from local and distant transmitters. Responsible for the inspection of tower sites, including guy wires, equipment enclosures, site safety and hazard signage; fill out and submit work requests for maintenance at these sites; update FCC license postings at radio sites as needed.
Supervise subordinate technical and maintenance workers; make assignments, give instructions, observe and inspect work performed ensuring the quality of work is satisfactory; responsible for inventory maintenance, cost account records for projects and progress reports. Responsible for procurement of materials by purchase requisition, including quotes and supporting documentation. Responsible for maintaining inventory and securing DEC asset tags for new procured equipment. Responsible for service contracts with outside vendors, inspection and approval of contractual work. Periodically submit progress reports and accomplishments to the Statewide Radio Engineer.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.
