Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience describing visual information that is not accessible to the visually impaired employee.
• Possess excellent keyboarding skills and a strong working knowledge of formatting principles.
• Proficient in reviewing documents quickly to be sure they match, adjusting the format as appropriate, and transcribing documents quickly and accurately once training is completed.
• Proficient in using the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience transcribing documents into Braille.
Duties Description Under the direction of a Manager Information Technology Services 2, SG-29, the Support Services Assistant, SG-05, will serve as an aide to an employee performing accessibility testing on New York State Websites. The Support Services aide will be responsible for transcribing internal office documents, memorandum, handwritten material and other otherwise inaccessible materials into Braille and back.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Convert Agency Accessibility Reports and Correspondence using standard templates into braille reports.
• Convert braille reports created by quality assurance (QA) personnel into quality reports for WebNY Personnel using Microsoft suite of products and Translation services software including Duxbury Braille Translation program.
• Convert pdf documents, memos, presentations, etc. to Microsoft Word documents, and run them through the Duxbury Braille Translation program and proofread end results to ensure information is conveyed in the original, intended format and meaning.
• Adjust format and layout of the Braille document as appropriate to convey original meaning and ensure braille reader comprehends and receives the original intent and meaning of the document. (e.g., if a document contains a table, ensure the table is converted to a Braille list).
• Format reports or other documents to ensure the visual formatting (margins, layout, spacing between lines, etc.) is appropriate and visually presentable.
• Assist WebNY QA staff with locating and accessing office equipment and resources to complete assigned duties and tasks.
• Alert staff of status messages provided on screens when needed and provides assistance with trouble shooting issues and requesting equipment support.
• Assist WebNY QA staff with locating and requisitioning paper, paper files, folders, documents and offices supplies.
• Assist WebNY QA Staff in coordinating repair and service of office equipment and Braille Translation related equipment.
• Assist WebNY QA staff with management of document repositories in electronic and soft copy formats.
• Ensure the correct placement, management and retention of documents and reports.
Additional Comments The position is pending Division of the Budget approval. Some positions may require fingerprinting. Selected candidates who are new or returning to NYS service may be required to pay for fingerprinting fees.
