Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively with students and staff, follow written and spoken instructions, and relate to the students being supervised. Candidates must be in good health, good physical condition, and able to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children and participate in physical activities such as swimming.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• An Associate’s Degree or higher in the Human Services field;
• Experience as a Nurse’s Aide;
• Skills in sign language;
• Experience in behavior modification, orientation and mobility;
• Certification in water safety, CPR, first aid, advanced first aid, or EMT; and
• Demonstrated skills working with the multiply disabled.
Employees of the NYSSB who are currently in a Child Care Aide 1 position and are interested in switching to a different shift MUST apply for the position as outlined in the Application section of this flyer.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Child Care Aide 1 position in the New York State School for the Blind. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for maintaining the safety and well-being of students, escorting students to and from activities, attending to students’ personal hygiene needs, assisting in the development of appropriate daily living skills, and providing supervision and assistance as necessary.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive, 10-month appointment, with the potential of working during the summer school session. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Sunday through Thursday, 11:00pm – 7:00pm.
**Leads to a maximum salary of $37,667 ($45,200 prorated to 10 months) with annual performance advances, plus annual $480 ($575 prorated to 10 months) inconvenience pay.
***Position will likely be filled on the shift listed. If current staff bid to change shifts, their current shift assignment will be backfilled. Second shift hours are Sunday, 5:00pm to 11:00pm; Monday, 2:00pm to 10:00pm; Tuesday, 2:00pm to 11:00pm; Wednesday, 1:00pm to 10:00pm; Thursday, 2:00pm to 10:00pm. Depending on dorm assignment, second shift hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays may be 2:00pm to 11:00pm.
