Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill a Graphic Designer 1, G-14, position assigned to the Public Information Office, Printing and Design Services. Printing and Design Services offers a full range of design services for OMH Central Office, OMH facilities, other state agencies, and local non-profit providers. The incumbent will be responsible for taking projects from initial planning and design stages, through the production phase, to final print and delivery. Printing and Design Services works in close collaboration with the OMH Print Shop (located in Utica, NY) on the production process and review of the final product before distribution. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Meet with clients to determine the scope of a project.

Advise clients on strategies to reach a particular audience.

Determine the message the design should portray.

Plan and design a concept or theme by studying information and materials provided, research topic via internet or other resources, find, generate or create imagery based on the design concept or theme.

Create a conceptual proof by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts.

Obtain approval of concept by submitting rough layout to customer for approval. Prepare finished copy and art by operating typesetting, printing, and similar equipment or preparing and providing files for outside vendors.

Create finished products (Posters, cards, etc.) using handwork techniques: large format copies, cutting and spray mount on foam core, lamination machine, grommets for banners, etc.

Use of text and images: select the type, font, size, color, and line length of headlines, headings, and text. Decide how images and text will go together on a print or webpage, including how much space each will have.

Create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. Develop the overall layout and production design for educational materials, brochures, pamphlets, flyers, posters, reports, conferences and other related materials.
