Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must possess NYS Certification as a School Psychologist.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• Expressive and receptive American Sign Language skills or the ability to obtain these skills; and
• Prior successful experience as a School Psychologist.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking to fill a School Psychologist position. The School Psychologist conducts educational and psychological assessments and develops case studies on individual students to determine educational needs, learning characteristics, and social behavior relevant to educational placement and instructional planning. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Interpret the findings of individual studies to principals, teachers, parents, students, and others directly concerned with the welfare of students;
• File case studies in compliance with established policies and procedures;
• Evaluate the results of tests in relation to the cultural, environmental, and language backgrounds of students;
• Facilitate training on interventions for use in the Response to Instruction and Intervention approach to education, targeted literacy, student progress monitoring, and data analysis;
• Communicate with students in sign language and fingerspelling as appropriate;
• Participate in the process required by federal, state, and local regulation for the referral, intake evaluations, annual, and triennial reviews of students who are deaf or hard of hearing;
• Participate in and act as chairperson for groups, such as the Multi-Disciplinary Team;
• Assist in developing Individual Educational Plans for students who are eligible for special education placement and/or services, and assist in developing recommendations regarding eligibility, and/or program placement;
• Assist in developing behavioral objectives for individual students and special class groups, suggest implementation strategies, and confer with teachers and parents regarding strategies for the solution or amelioration of individual learning or adjustment problems of students;
• Develop safety plans in conjunction with Instructors and Child Care Aides;
• Counsel students individually and in groups to assist them in educational achievement and personal or social adjustments;
• Account for services through Medicaid reports;
• Assist with the organization of, and serve as a leader in, staff development activities in the field of psychological services;
• Coordinate deaf-blind services;
• Participate in school committee assignments and staff training requirements; and
• Assist with the school-wide discipline system in regard to tracking students, reviewing intervention strategies, assessing behavior modification needs, and handle crisis response issues.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and/or transcripts and New York State teaching certification in Special Education will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to possess New York State certification as a School Psychologist at the time of hire. Continued employment as a School Psychologist is dependent upon maintaining New York State certification as a School Psychologist. Candidates with an Initial New York State certification as a School Psychologist will be required to obtain a Permanent New York State certification as a School Psychologist prior to the expiration of the Initial New York State certification as a School Psychologist. Failure to maintain a New York State certification as a School Psychologist will result in removal from employment. This will be an 11-month, permanent appointment. Candidate must work four weeks during summer session paid at the extra-service rate.
