Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
A viable eligible list may not exist in this location and NYSDOT may be authorized to make a provisional appointment at this location. Candidates appointed provisionally must take and pass the next scheduled Civil Service examination, and be reachable on the resulting eligibility list, or their employment in the position (may have hold item) will end.
The minimum requirements for taking the Promotion examination are:
You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of PERMANENT competitive, non-competitive or 55b/55c service as an Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Junior Engineer, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
After one year of the service in a position described above, successful candidates will be qualified for an appointment.
The minimum requirements for taking the Open Competitive examination are:
Either 1. FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;
Or 2. a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;
Or 3. an associate’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics AND TWO years of experience listed above in #1; Or 4. a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics** issued by a regionally accredited college or university and TWO years of experience listed above in #1.

Duties Description As a Principal Engineering Technician, you would perform complex and technical activities in support of various engineering projects and/or program areas. These activities might include preparing written reports and cost estimates of materials, supplies and equipment, preparing plans and or details utilizing CADD software, developing or reviewing contract plans and specifications, and being an assistant on a survey crew. You may supervise lower-level technicians in such areas as design, construction inspection, surveying, traffic engineering, maintenance, planning, engineering research, and material testing. Additionally, you may plan and schedule field and laboratory test work, review test reports, and develop testing equipment and procedures. You may also be expected to use various computer applications in the performance of your duties. Specific program assignments and duties will be discussed at the time of your interview.

Responsibilities also may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
