Minimum Qualifications Possession of a license as a master of towing vessel with endorsements for inland, ocean, or near coastal waters; a license as a United States Coast Guard master of towing vessel, limited for the area (as determined by OCMI); or be a mariner licensed as a master of inspected, self-propelled vessels greater than 200 gross registered tons (GRT) holding either a completed Towing Officer's Assessment Record (TOAR) bearing the signature of a Designated Examiner and stating that the Examiner found the candidate proficient or a license endorsed for towing; and two years of experience as a deckhand, mate, or pilot on a towing vessel; and valid New York State Class D driver license.
Duties Description Operates and pilots a diesel-powered tugboat vessel at the Tappan Zee/Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge on the Hudson River; responsible for proper operation and piloting when underway; directs the movement and placement of a 35-ton crane barge and other floating plant used in the replacement of timber piling, ice breakers, fenders, caissons and piers; and delivers materials and personnel to work sites. The Thruway Tug Captain is also responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the vessel assigned to them.
Additional Comments A location differential of $3,026 annually is included in base pay.
