Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology or a related life sciences field and five years of post - degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in veterinary medicine and 4 years of professional post degree experience; or a doctorate in veterinary medicine and 2 years of professional post degree experience.



The preferred candidate will posses a Doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and two years of experience as a clinical veterinarian in a private practice or laboratory animal setting; New York State licensure to practice veterinary medicine and/or a license to practice veterinary medicine, in standing, in at least one state and eligible for New York State licensure within one year of hire; the ability to obtain Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration; and a valid driver’s license. The preferred candidate must have American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification (or eligibility for ACLAM board certification); a practitioner’s DEA license for dispensing controlled substances in New York State, and experience in an animal research environment. Familiarity with the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) international accreditation process and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Duties Description This position will serve as the assistant to the attending veterinarian providing routine and emergency veterinary care in compliance with all federal and state regulations; prevent, diagnose, control and treat animal diseases and injuries; observe animals routinely to assess their health and well-being; supervise the care and monitoring of animals involved in research and in quarantine, barrier, and Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) 2 and 3 biocontainment vivaria; determine the needs for animal housing facilities, equipment, and services and communicate those needs to the Center; guide and educate Principal Investigators, veterinary technicians and caretakers, and other personnel involved in the care and use of animals; maintain accurate records and documentation required for research, IACUC, and AAALAC; provide pre and post-procedural care in accordance with established veterinary medical procedures; participate in applied research projects; support Center committees and activities impacting laboratory animal resources (Chemical, Radiation, and Biosafety committees); and participate in audits of the facilities by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and AAALA. Duties also include collaborating with research teams on development and planning; data interpretation; and promoting regulatory compliance. Travel between facilities is required.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Possible overtime required. A valid NYS driver’s license is required. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.
