Minimum Qualifications 1. Four years of experience performing engineering technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; or as a surveyor or drafter;

OR

2. Graduation for high school (or possession of a high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized education authority or a USAFI GED diploma high school level) AND one year of the experience described in option 1 above;

OR

3. Graduation from a high school technical education program in technical aeronautics, technical architectural drafting and building construction; technical chemistry, industrial chemistry, technical electricity/electronics, technical mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems or computer circuitry;

OR

4. Eighteen college semester credit hours in any combination of the following courses: engineering; such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and/or sanitary; public health; environmental and/or engineering technology; drafting; mathematics; surveying; computer science, environmental science; and/or the natural and physical sciences.

Duties Description DEC Division of Lands & Forests, Forest Health, has a statewide invasive species control program for giant hogweed, kudzu, and other target species. This position will assist with many aspects of the giant hogweed and kudzu programs including database management and data entry, GIS polygon creation, editing and analysis, analyzing GIS data to determine stream survey program for upcoming season, providing information about giant hogweed and kudzu identification and control methods to the public, answering giant hogweed and kudzu phone calls and e-mails, viewing plant photos to verify new sites, connecting landowners with confirmed sites to our control program, providing assistance to field crews, and controlling a small number of giant hogweed sites within the southeastern region of New York State.

Principal Duties
• Responsible for managing the giant hogweed information line (over 2,000 calls/emails annually)
• Manage database of statewide Giant Hogweed and Kudzu infestations and associated information.
• Coordinate efforts of control crews working across New York State, as well as other program management tasks.
• Responsible for getting paperwork and training supplies ready for crews prior to field season.
• Responsible for scanning and processing paperwork and electronically filing photos post-season.
• Prepare charts and graphs depicting information collected throughout the field season.
• Responsible for a variety of GIS tasks including polygon creation, editing crew polygons, creating reports and maps, setting up stream survey program and training crews on how to use GIS programs.
• Control Giant Hogweed infestations in eastern New York State. This is a labor-intensive process and involves using a shovel to cut the plant taproot 5 inches below ground level. Site & control information, photos and GIS polygons are collected at each site.

Additional Comments Preferred knowledge and skills:
• Coursework related to GIS, environmental studies, ecology, natural resource management, conservation biology, forestry, wildlife biology, etc.
• Experience with invasive species, control techniques and strong plant identification skills. Ability to identify giant hogweed, kudzu, common look-alikes, and other invasive plants.
• Experience creating professional maps, creating/editing polygons, and analyzing data using ArcGIS Pro
• Experience giving PowerPoint presentations and leading training sessions
• Physical ability to dig, cut and survey for hogweed plants for hours at a time in hot weather in a variety of terrains while maintaining a good attitude.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact well with the public and provide accurate information about giant hogweed to interested persons.
• Self-motivated, work well both independently and in a collaborative setting.

Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required.

This is a temporary position funded through March 31, 2020 with a possibility of continuing after that date. Actual work schedule and hours may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
