Minimum Qualifications Five or more years of experience in supporting Ciena/Nortel DWDM equipment and supporting a Service Provider Wide Area Network.
The following degrees, preferably in Computer Science, may substitute for the general experience as indicated:
• Associate’s degree and four years of experience
• Associate’s degree including 15 semester credit hours in computer science and three years of experience
• Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience
• Bachelor’s degree including 15 semester credit hours in computer science and two years of experience
• Master’s degree in computer science or related field substitutes for an additional year of experience
• Doctorate in computer science or related field substitutes for an additional 2 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ten years of experience supporting Ciena/Nortel DWDM equipment;
• Ten years of experience supporting a Service Provider Wide Area Network;
• Exemplary communication, analytical and organizational skills;
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment;
• In-depth experience designing, installing, and troubleshooting Ciena DWDM 3500/5200/6500/CPL/Waveservers hardware;
• Detailed knowledge of fiber optics and testing of fiber;
• Proficiency in using OTDR equipment to characterize fiber and evaluate fiber traces;
• Proficiency in the installation and support of DC cabling and power rectifiers.
Duties Description Under the direction of an Information Technology Specialist 4 SG25 within the Chief Operations Office Networks/Telecommunications Wide Area Network team, the Project Assistant will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
• Design, coordinate and implement the Ciena DWDM backbone, providing transport and connectivity for NYS;
• Review agency network connectivity and access requirements;
• Design, coordinate, implement, and troubleshoot DWDM ring supporting NYS datacenters;
• Troubleshoot DWDM outages, including physical plant, hardware, and software;
• Perform evaluations on software/hardware intended to be added or updated within the ITS WAN infrastructure to ensure network continuity/compatibility;
• Perform software upgrades on WAN hardware to keep devices in compliance for vendor support;
• Provide Tier 3 technical support, analysis & troubleshooting for ITS staff, customers and their business partners, including off-shift support as required;
• Responsible for DWDM portion of design and implementation of all enterprise network projects (ie: UniteNY, Enterprise Wireless, Network Convergence, New York eXchange NYX, Datacenter Consolidation, T1 migration, etc.);
• Work with NOC staff to update procedures and tools to ensure proper 24/7/365 support of DWDM infrastructure;
• Keep network documentation updated and accurate: Visio diagrams, operational procedures, training manuals, network templates, etc.;
• Make recommendations that fix current network design flaws and allow for growth. Provide in-depth analysis on network data captures;
• Use all available network tools to provide exceptional support/service to fulfill customer requirements.
