PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working in laboratory safety (biological, radiological, and/or chemical) or other health and safety programs in a laboratory environment is preferred. Professional certification as an industrial hygienist (CIF) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or as a safety professional (CSP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals is desirable. Preferred candidates will be detail oriented, with computer literacy in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Responsibilities will require candidates to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; excellent organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, work with diplomacy and efficiency in a pressured environment; and the capability to carry out activities independently.

Duties Description The incumbent will work with Wadsworth Center Safety Office leadership to manage and oversee programs and policies aimed at minimizing safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks to the Wadsworth Center community. The Safety Office program encompasses chemical safety, biosafety, fire/life safety, radiation safety, environmental programs, as well as general safety oversight across the Center. Responsibilities will include activities such as conducting laboratory safety inspections; investigating and examining the workplace for hazards and potential risk and working with staff to mitigate workplace hazards; performing accident and incident investigation; providing laboratory safety support and technical consultation and assist staff with promoting compliance with regulatory standards; collaborating with internal groups and outside agencies to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and safety initiatives; performing risk assessments and guiding associated improvements in performance and hazard control activities; developing and delivering professional training and education in key program areas; supporting safety program activities focused on biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, hazardous waste compliance, occupational health and safety, and environmental compliance as requested, responding to hazardous material spills, gas leaks, and other indoor air quality issues; participate on institutional safety committees as assigned.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.
