Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany, land surveying and forest biology,
OR
one (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Duties Description The work area includes State Forests in Herkimer and Oneida County; containing approximately 51,000 acres of diverse forested ecosystems. The Forestry Technician 1 will assist our Lands and Forests team primarily with the following duties.

Principal duties may include some or all of the following:
• Conduct various forest measurements and collect inventory plot data using: map and compass, a hand-held data collector and GPS unit, BAF prism, clinometer, Biltmore stick, data sheets, and other related forestry equipment, following standard procedures
• Make forest management recommendations
• Input field data into the State Forest Inventory Program
• Assist with forest stand delineation, data entry and analysis, and mapping projects using ArcGIS
• Assist forester in marking timber sales following a written prescription, recommended Best Management Practices, and State Forest policy
• Perform timber volume calculations
• Assist with various Unit Management Planning projects
• Assist with public education and presentations
• Assist with forest health monitoring and other forest management projects
Essential skills include:
• Tree species identification
• Tree diameter and height measurement
• Ability to navigate with both compass and pacing, and a GPS unit
• Basic familiarity with ArcGIS
• Proficiency with the Word, Excel, Adobe and PowerPoint programs
• Ability to work both independently, and as part of a team
• Successful candidates will be required to work alone, in rough terrain and varying weather conditions.

Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and/or work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Actual work schedule and hours may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Funding for this position is secured through 3/31/20, with a likelihood of continuing beyond this date.
