Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred. No prior specific work experience required.
• Employee should be able to use basic computer programs such as the internet and Microsoft Word for email,
training, and basic data entry.
• Must be able to read and follow written and verbal orders from facility supervisor and Veterinarian.
• Must be able to write legibly and record health data.
• Must have valid driver’s license.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
• Employee’s work will involve working with laboratory rodents.
• Employee will be exposed to unpleasant odors and animal wastes.
• Hazardous chemicals include alcohols, bleach, cage wash detergents and acids, and other disinfectants.
• Must be willing to work with both BSL1 and BSL2 level organisms.
• Other occupational hazards include bites, scratches and ergonomic hazards (such as lifting).
• Employee must be able to lift 50+ pounds (feed and supplies) and carry for short distances without
assistance at times.
• Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Immunization for Tetanus is
required unless waived by the employee.
• Safety training and protective clothing, equipment, and supplies will be provided to the employee. Employee
should be able to provide shoes suitable to working in a laboratory environment.

Duties Description The successful candidate must be able to perform daily animal husbandry procedures such as cleaning and move cages, feed animals, perform daily wellness checks on animals, and disinfect/sanitize cages using various detergents and washing methods. Must be able to work well as a team member, as well as independently. May perform other duties as assigned by the Facility Supervisor or Veterinarian.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are but not limited to:
To handle and ensure humane care of research rodents.
• Properly pick up, restrain and transfer animals between cages during routine husbandry tasks.
• Be able to comply with all personal safety requirements, including proper donning of personal protective equipment.
• Will work with various rodent housing systems.
• Prepares and uses disinfectants and detergents to clean and disinfect animal quarters, cages and associated equipment.
• Will be trained to operate large cage wash equipment and autoclave.
• Will be required to remove husbandry-related waste in compliance with local and state regulations.
• Keep accurate room logs for daily room checks.
• Trains and assists investigators and new staff members with husbandry-related tasks. For example, may mix
and/or administer medications according to specific instructions.
• Transports supplies for the Animal Colony.
• Acts as a liaison for researchers.
• May be asked to review inventory and stock supplies, including unloading and transport shipments of husbandry
and housekeeping supplies.
• Performs other cleaning/sanitation duties as assigned.
• Observe and report any abnormalities in animals, equipment, or facilities.
• May be asked to assist with study endpoints.
• Communicates well with the facility supervisor and veterinarian.
• Participates in monthly staff meetings.
• Complete all New York State required trainings, including online modules.
• Must be willing to work weekends and holidays based on needs of the worksite.
Observations/Handling:
• Observes, documents and reports on animal wellness, general husbandry, behavior and interactions, both normal
and abnormal.
• Maintains required records concerning health and location of animal(s) being cared for.
• Restrains animals using proper techniques for the species as required for husbandry tasks.
• Performs other observation duties as assigned.
