Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that of an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred qualification: Proficiency in the plumbing trade
Employees must possess a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment & continuously maintain it thereafter or face possible disciplinary action up to & including termination.
Duties Description The NYS Canal Corporation (Corporation) is seeking candidates for the position of Trades Generalist at their Utica Section. The duties of the Trades Generalist will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Assist with inspecting and determining the section’s maintenance needs and make recommendations for repair, materials, and work request priorities.
• Perform repairs in plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and equipment.
• Assist other trades with repairs in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and equipment.
• Plan and lay out construction, repair and maintenance projects and have a working knowledge of applicable standards and plumbing code regulations.
• Diagnose problems in, plumbing, water and sewer systems, motors, pumps, boilers, water heaters, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, septic systems, lift stations and grinder pumps.
• Use hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments appropriate for the projects assigned.
• Track supplies and materials to ensure they are used properly.
• Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, collection/pick-up of trash and other obstructions.
• Periodic travel may be required to other sections; to attend training; or other requirements related to duties as needed.
• Incumbent may be responsible for supervising others in maintenance, repair, installation and construction activities.
• Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
