Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. If you are on the Civil Service eligible list for this title, you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter.

Section 70.4 Transfer: Candidates may be eligible for nomination for transfer under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law to Museum Registrar if they are a current NYS employee with one year of permanent competitive or 55 b/c service in a title 20 or higher AND have standing on the Museum Registrar eligible list AND possess Either A. A Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archeology, biology, botany, zoology, history, or museum studies AND three years of full time experience directing a large* history, anthropology, or natural history museum curatorial, registration or collections management program; OR B. A Master’s degree in one of the above disciplines; AND two years of the above-listed experience.

* A large program is defined as having, at least 100,000 objects in its collection

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s New York State Museum is seeking candidates for a Museum Registrar position. The Museum Registrar is responsible for managing, planning, and directing all aspects of the State Museum’s registration and collections management functions and related activities. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Create and maintain legal documents and records of permanent New York State Museum (NYSM) collections, loaned collections, and collections on exhibition;
• Manage and supervise photographic documentation of objects and ensures that all acquisitions, loans, and deaccessions comply with NYSM policies and procedures;
• Oversee movement, packing, shipping and inspection of objects to conform to insurance regulations and collection stewardship guidelines;
• Monitor all display and storage areas for proper environmental conditions such as light levels, temperature, humidity, pollution, and pest control.
• Facilitate care and control of collections that includes implementation of security procedures, works with contractors, and develops guidelines for purchase of collection storage.
• Maintain records of storage, exhibit, and loan locations of all objects in collection for use of establishment personnel, insurance representatives, and other persons utilizing facilities; and
• Arrange for insurance of objects on loan or special exhibition or recommends insurance coverage on parts of or entire collection.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.

** Leads to a maximum salary of $88,124 based on annual performance advances.
