Minimum Qualifications • Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Possess current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent.
• Possess current certification in the American Red Cross Waterfront Module or equivalent.
• Possess a certificate in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent.
• A copy of all certificates must be on file with the Regional Operations Supervisor in the regional office prior to the first day of employment. All required certifications must be kept current for the duration of employment. Copies should be available upon request of the DEC Central Office or the NYS Department of Health for beach inspections and kept at the facility.
• After receiving an offer of employment, new lifeguards will submit a DEC Medical Standards and Examination Findings for Lifeguard form filled out by a qualified physician. All medical forms are kept confidential and must be submitted before the first day of a lifeguard's employment;
• Successfully complete a practical examination administered by DEC or OPRHP in Lifesaving and CPR skills;
• Successfully complete a personal interview with DEC staff;
• Must meet the vision requirement of 20/70 uncorrected vision in both eyes and be correctable to the 20/40 standard.
• Must attend a lifeguard orientation prior to employment.
Duties Description Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Chief Lifeguard/Lifeguard 2/CRFS, lifeguards shall be responsible for:
• Guarding the area to which assigned or reassigned.
• Understanding the rules and regulations which apply to Department of Conservation swimming areas and ensuring that these rules and regulations are observed by people using the bathing facility;
• Preventing accidents and effecting rescues.
• Maintaining a high level of physical and mental fitness by participating in an active in-service training program.
• Making detailed written reports to their supervisors on all accidents and rescues.
• Performing other duties as assigned in inclement weather.
• All tasks are to be conducted in a safe manner, with any injuries/illnesses reported immediately to supervisor.
• Ensure that LATS is submitted/approved by the Friday following end of the pay period.
Additional Comments Housing is available. Candidate may need to have transportation from campground with residence to assigned beach campground. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Weekends and holidays may be required.
