Minimum Qualifications To be considered for the permanent appointment, you must be reachable on the current Civil Service list. If a viable list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive exam and be reachable on the Eligible List to be considered for a permanent appointment to the position.
Current certification as a New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or three years of qualifying experience.* An associate’s degree in psychology, counseling, sociology, social science, social work, alcoholism, substance abuse, criminal justice, correctional studies, addictions studies, human services, community health or a related field may be substituted for two years of this experience. *Qualifying experience is defined as professional or paraprofessional experience in a recognized program whose primary mission is alcohol and/or substance abuse treatment (hospital, correctional or other additional recover program.) This experience must include all of the following:
-Individual or group counseling
-Intake/assessment
-Treatment planning
-Case work
-Consultation
-The development of substance use disorder diagnostic impression
Counseling or casework experience must have focused primarily on the establishment of an ongoing, one-to-one relationship between you and the client, to establish and maintain recovery and prevent relapse. Group experience must have focused primarily on responsibility for conducting group sessions designed to provide the participants with services for alcohol/substance abuse problems.
Duties Description Provide ongoing treatment services to inmates with substance abuse disorders. Development treatment findings and conclusions based on an admission and compressive evaluation; establish a substance use disorder diagnostic impression; develop and implement a person-centered treatment plan for each assigned inmate; continually evaluate and document the level and quality of participation and progress towards reasonably applied goals for each inmate; and provide services to ensure successful treatment. Work with other staff and provide such services in a variety of treatment modalities in order to assist the inmate in addiction rehabilitation. These services include: recruiting, screening, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, reviewing, coordinating educational and treatment services using various media, continuing recovery planning and individual and group counseling.
