Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum requirements for taking the Open Competitive examination:
• Either 1. 60 college semester credit hours including at least 15 college semester credit hours in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance, or electronic technology;
• Or 2. two years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial or military electronic/electrical integrated system components;
• Or 3. military training in an electronics field including completion of an electronic/electrical school* program AND one year of the experience described in #2 above;
• Or 4. graduation from a high school technical electricity/electronics education program or a BOCES program issued by a recognized education authority (see note 2) AND one year of the experience described in #2 above.
Note: within 3 months of appointment, you must obtain and maintain a valid NYS Class B CDL permit and within 12 months, a valid NYS Class B CDL license with no airbrake restriction. Failure to maintain and obtain permit and license will result in termination.
Duties Description The duties for Traffic Systems Technician 1 include but are not limited to:
• Troubleshoot and repair traffic signal equipment, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and other communications equipment;
• Program traffic signal controllers; inspect traffic signal systems; and perform modifications;
• Prepare legal documents which define the operations of traffic control devices
• Review and modify design plans;
• Maintain a database of repair records and equipment condition;
• Perform emergency repair of traffic control and ITS devices and equipment;
• Stand-by and overtime availability are required and candidate will be expected to respond after hours for service and repair to callouts;
• Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
