Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have had two years of experience in the operation of large inboard motors or three seasons as a Marine Helper or in another maintenance position concerned with the operation of large inboard engines.

Candidate may, upon section needs, be required to possess a valid and current United States Coast 50 Ton Master License with a Master of Towing License Endorsement and a valid License to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

USCG Drug Testing required prior to appointment.

Candidates must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment and continuously maintain it thereafter or face termination.

Duties Description The Canal Corporation (Canals) works in partnership with local, state, and federal entities to implement canal projects that meet the goals and objectives of the NYS Canal Recreationway Plan and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Plan. The projects are geared towards increasing public access and use of the Canal System, adding new and improved trail linkages and enhancing tourism and economic revitalization opportunities along the 524 miles comprising the Canal system. The New York State Canal System, includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals, linking the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain.

A Tender Captain operates and pilots a tender boat, carries equipment and personnel to dredges, and may be required to perform similar duties as the operator of a self-propelled scow when necessary. A Tender Captain also has other responsibilities such as, but not limited to, helping with the installation and removal of buoys, maintenance and repairs to the Tender, housekeeping and painting of the Tender, filling out paperwork, and keeping logs.
