Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have at least 10 years of prosecutorial experience, including:
• Experience supervising the felony legal work of multiple attorneys;
• Substantial homicide grand jury and trial experience as a prosecutor;
• Excellent legal writing and editing skills;
• Experience conducting complex investigations of felony crimes, including homicides; and
• Experience responding to and managing complex, active crime scenes.

All or some of the following experience is preferred: (1) significant experience working with and in diverse communities and doing community outreach; (2) policy development experience, including criminal justice policies; and (3) experience investigating cases involving alleged law enforcement misconduct. To meet the requirement of 10 years of prosecutorial experience, we will consider all relevant criminal law experience including criminal defense work.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced criminal prosecutor to serve as Bureau Chief (BC) of the newly created Office of Special Investigation (OSI). In June 2020, the New York State Legislature passed legislation codifying and expanding the Governor’s previous Executive Order, granting the OAG the jurisdiction to investigate and potentially prosecute incidents when a police officer or peace officer causes the death of a person. The BC position provides a unique and exciting opportunity to join OSI at the ground floor, to assemble a team of committed professionals, enhance transparency, strengthen public trust in the criminal justice system, and engage and collaborate with external stakeholders and partners.

Reporting to the Chief Deputy Attorney General for the Criminal Justice Division, the BC will lead a bureau comprised of experienced felony and homicide prosecutors and legal support staff, located at various OAG offices throughout the State. The BC will also partner with a team of detective investigators assigned to OSI. The BC will be based in New York City along with approximately half of the OSI bureau personnel. The position will require some travel.

Additional Comments The annual compensation for this position is $168,984. We offer a comprehensive New York State benefits package, including paid leave, health, dental, vision and retirement benefits, and family-friendly policies. As an employee of the OAG, you will join a team of dedicated individuals who work to serve the people of our State.

Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The OAG is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to workplace diversity.

Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
