Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and have strong interpersonal and communication skills. The position requires an understanding of the role of a policymaking board, organization and problem-solving skills, and the ability to supervise and plan.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the workings of the Board of Regents and the New York State Education Department.
Candidates for the position of Secretary to the Board of Regents should demonstrate highly developed management skills, including a minimum of three years in staff supervision, and responsibility for multiple activities utilizing organizational and coordination skills. Sound professional judgment, discretion and superior communication skills are essential, including the ability to effectively interact with and provide information and guidance to individuals and groups at all levels of responsibility both within the Department and with external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be able to articulate extensive knowledge of policymaking. Familiarity and/or experience with New York State's educational systems and structure are strongly preferred. The work of the Secretary to the Board of Regents is critical to the Board's various meetings throughout New York State, and the ability to plan and oversee a multitude of activities is vital.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Board of Regents is seeking candidates for the position of Secretary to the Board of Regents. Under the direction of the Chancellor and the members of the Board, the Secretary to the Board serves as the liaison to the Commissioner and the staff of the State Education Department. The incumbent will manage the operations and staff of the Regents Office. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Prepare and coordinate the 11 monthly Board meetings, which include agenda development;
• Oversee all logistics (coordinating timing of the committee meetings, Board travel, security, transportation and Board mailings) for the monthly 2-day meetings working closely with multiple offices in the Department and the Regents office staff;
• Advise the members of the Board of Regents on Board processes, policies and practices;
• In coordination with the Office of Public Affairs and the Office of Governmental Relations, work closely on communicating the Board’s mission statement, which include coordinating their public appearances with external partners, stakeholders and the media;
• Oversee and coordinate special events on behalf of the Chancellor and the Board of Regents;
• Obtain timely answers to Regents’ questions on a wide variety of topics;
• Provide briefings to the Chancellor and Regents as requested on issues occurring across the Department;
• Oversee the Board of Regents adherences to NYS and Board policies and protocols; and
• Oversee the publication of official notice of the actions and deliberations of the Board.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is in the exempt class and the incumbent will serve at the discretion of the Board of Regents. Occasional travel and after hours and weekend work will be expected and required. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of Budget approval.
