Beginning in October 1782 over 7,000 soldiers and 500 family members encamped here and by late December 1782 they had erected nearly 600 log huts creating a "cantonment," a military enclave. At New Windsor Cantonment, the cease fire orders were read on April 19, 1783, ending eight years of fighting.

Knox’s Headquarters: On several occasions during the Revolutionary War, Major General Henry Knox, commander of the American artillery, established his headquarters at John Ellison's 1754 Georgian-style house in Vails Gate. While General Washington stayed at the widow Hasbrouck's house in Newburgh, New York, Major General Horatio Gates occupied the elegant Ellison home as commander of the New Windsor Cantonment from November 1782 – March 1783.
