Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in geology, geosciences, earth sciences, or a related field and two years of professional experience OR a Master’s Degree in geology, geosciences, earth sciences, or a related field and one year of professional experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• A Master’s of Science degree in geology with experience in New York geology or the Great Lakes Region of the United States;
• A record of geologic map production, fieldwork experience in glaciated terrains classifying surficial geologic materials in both outcrop and cores, or bedrock mapping;
• Experience or training in sedimentology;
• Completion of a geological mapping field course;
• Experience with subsurface drilling and stratigraphic investigations;
• Analytical skills and experience in plant macrofossil identification and palynology or geochronology;
• Experience using geophysical methods for subsurface and engineering applications;
• Experience in structural geology;
• Experience producing geologic maps and databases in ESRI ArcGIS Software; and
• Appropriate educational coursework to qualify for geologic licensure in New York State http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/geo/geolic.htm.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 1 position in the New York State Museum (NYSM) Geological Survey. Under the supervision of the Museum STATEMAP coordinator, the Museum Scientist 1 will conduct geological mapping and field investigations, geologic research, provide scientific support to the Museum’s geologic mapping program, perform and disseminate related research, and contribute to exhibition, public, and educational programming. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Initiate and conduct independent field-based geologic mapping and laboratory research as directed by the STATEMAP coordinator on the surficial and bedrock geology of New York;
• Collaborate in the design of specific research strategies and projects that meet the highest professional standards of geologic mapping research;
• Assist in scheduling, implementation, collection, and oversight of subsurface drilling and coring investigations related primarily to the glacial stratigraphy of New York and mapping program investigation;
• Travel for extended periods of time (durations of two weeks or more are possible) across New York while completing mapping assignments and deliverables;
• Inventory, manage spatial data, and document landslide incidence and annual mineral resource usage;
• Initiate and complete analyses on sediments, such as loss on ignition (LOI) and grain-size analyses;
• Prepare research findings as open–file reports, for presentation at professional conferences, public programming, and educational events, and as peer-reviewed publications;
• Assist in the development of Museum exhibits and plans, including taking responsibility for implementation and possible participation in exhibit planning and communication of elements of research to the Museum's diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not traditionally represented in museums; and
• Develop public and educational programs to meet museum oriented and/or community-oriented goals of the Museum.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. *Leads to a maximum salary of $71,980 based on annual performance advances.
