Minimum Qualifications Two years’ experience in the operation and/or maintenance of park, historic site, or recreational facility; OR two years’ experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical/trades school course.

Duties Description Under the supervision of higher- level personnel, the selected candidate may be engaged in the performance or coordination of, but not limited to the following tasks and activities as described.


1. Supervises and trains seasonal employees in the performance of the duties and responsibilities mentioned below.

2. Performs general area maintenance including, but not limited to litter control, garbage removal, groundskeeping, landscaping, snow and ice control, restroom cleanliness and housekeeping.

3. Operates light trucks, dump trucks, utility task vehicles (UTV), loaders, tractor with attachments, riding mowers, etc.

4. Conducts inspections of assigned areas and buildings for safety hazards, corrects problems where possible, and makes requests to supervisor for skilled trades assistance when needed.

5. Assists skilled trades in carrying out maintenance and repairs, including but not limited to carpentry, plumbing and electrical. May need to climb ladders.

6. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on various equipment used; may include changing cutting blades, fueling or mixing fuel according to machinery specifications, greasing equipment, changing tires, sharpen and service chainsaws, etc.

7. Submit recommendations to supervisor for tools and/or materials needed in the performance of duties, prepares necessary related paperwork.

8. Operates chain saws; willing to receive “Game of Logging”, First Aid, CPR and AED training.

9. Investigates incidents and unusual occurrences and completes necessary reports.

10. Loads, moves, carries, or unloads material of varying weights and sizes as required in the performance of the duties described.

11. Performs revenue and office related activities such as issuing permits, cashiering, conducting audits, answer telephone, provides information to park visitors.

12. Trains staff as assigned in the proper use of hand tools and in the operation and maintenance of landscaping equipment, chainsaws, power tools, etc.

13. Trains seasonal staff on how to deal with inquiries concerning park information and how to handle patron complaints. When necessary, brings to supervisor’s attention those visitor complaints that cannot be resolved at this level.

14. Conducts inventory of tools, small equipment, and supplies.

15. Performs other related duties as required.


Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS
Selected candidate must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class D Driver License by the date of appointment and maintain the license as a term and condition of employment.
Ability to read and understand written and/or verbal material and instructions; effective communication skills
Ability to do simple math (i.e. add, subtract, multiply and divide)
Ability to operate and maintain lawn and garden equipment as well as small hand tools
Ability to lift, carry and move equipment or materials of different weights and sizes
Ability to supervise small work crews.
The candidate may be expected to work weekends, holidays and various shifts.
